OUR RESPONSE TO COVID-19

From Frances Wright, Co-Founder of the Famous 5 Foundation…

”Well, we had quite the discussion with the bronze Famous 5 about wearing masks.

The F5 don masks.

Emily objected, objected strenuously because she felt that it was an infringement on her personal liberty for which she’d fought very hard to have but after four had their masks on, she said… ok…

Henrietta explained that the Victorian Order of Nurses had told her that wearing the mask would keep her safe but she, of course, was remembering the day when her darling son, her only son died of the Spanish flu – even though he had worn a handkerchief over his nose and mouth. My F5 colleague, Ellen Parker, quickly put her arm around Henrietta and comforted her.

“All five of the Famous Five survived the Spanish Flu and went on to campaign for women having the right to vote and run for elected office.”

Louise was easy! She welcomed the wearing of masks because that meant it would be harder for people to drink alcohol if everyone wore a mask.

Irene wasn’t happy about the colour and style of the masks.  She really liked the glamourous one which Ellen was wearing but wouldn’t let me ask Ellen if she would mind exchanging masks…  Am sure Ellen would have graciously exchanged masks.

And then there was Nellie, who was mainly interested in the gender of the media who came to cover the event.  She wondered which one of gentlemen was from the CBC (Remember she was the first woman to serve on the Board of the CBC!) and why all the videographers and photographers were male. Ellen explained that she sent an invitation to the media offices and that the assignment editors – all female! – sent the guys so they would learn more about the Famous 5.”
