93rd Anniversary of the 'Persons' Case - Sunday, October 16, 2022

  • Fairmont Palliser Hotel, Crystal Ballroom 113 9 Avenue Southwest Calgary, AB Canada (map)

Let’s celebrate our victories!

The 93rd Anniversary of the ‘Persons’ Case!

Sunday, October 16, 2022

Fairmont Palliser Hotel, Crystal Ballroom

The courage of the F5 enables women to vote, run for elected office and serve as Senators!

We invite you to celebrate the courage of the F5 and all of their achievements with us at a special event at the Fairmont Palliser Hotel’s Crystal Ballroom.

Come have tea with some of Calgary’s outstanding women leaders!

Before the ‘Persons’ Case decision declaring ‘women are persons’ on Oct. 18, 1929, women were legally defined as being ‘eligible for pains and penalties but not rights and privileges.’ The ‘Persons’ Case declared that ‘both women and men are persons!’ and in Canada that meant women could be appointed to the Senate!

While enjoying a delicious tea, there will be singing and lively conversation! Chat with trailblazers!! Singer/songwriter Carolyn Harley will teach us her Ballad of the Famous Five and the Spirit of the Famous Five so that we have many ways to encourage ourselves to succeed!

Ticket options are available per person, for a table of 8 or purchase a VIP Table of 8.

Please come to tea!

Featuring Special Guests

The Honourable Lois E. Mitchell, CM AOE, LLD

Former Alberta Lt. Governor

The Hon. Lois Mitchell is a career businesswoman and a proud, longstanding member of Canada’s dedicated corps of community volunteers. She served as the 18th Lieutenant Governor of Alberta from June 12, 2015 until she completed her five-year term on August 26, 2020.

During her tenure in office, she chose to make history education a priority and became founding patron of the History and Heroes Foundation, of which she is now the Chair. The Hon. Lois Mitchell is currently Co-Chair of the Global Business Forum, Co-Chair of Ignite Calgary, and a Governor of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society. She is also a board member of Football Canada, the Canadian Paralympic Foundation and the World Literacy Foundation.

Prior to becoming Lieutenant Governor, she spent many years working as an entrepreneur, developing and growing successful marketing and corporate training firms. Her résumé as a community volunteer includes service in a wide range of areas, including sport, education, the arts, national unity and support for Canada’s men and women in uniform. She is a past Board Chair of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce, past Board Chair of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and a past Board Director for UBS Bank (Canada) and Mitacs.

Her belief in the value of amateur sport, to both individuals and the community as a whole, prompted volunteer service as a Director of the Hockey Canada Foundation, Ambassador and Governor of the Canadian Women’s Hockey League, Co-Chair of the Gold-Medal Plates dinner in support of aspiring Olympians and was the Chair for the inaugural World Women’s Under-18 Hockey Championships. She has long been a proud supporter and advocate of the Special Olympics Canada Foundation.

Lois, along with her husband Doug, have extended generous patronage over the years to a variety of programs and scholarships to support Canada’s athletes and to foster opportunities for women in amateur sport. The Doug and Lois Mitchell Trophies are presented annually to the top male and female Canadian university athletes as part of the U SPORTS Mitchell Family Athletic Awards which have been championed by the Mitchells since 1993.

In 2015, Hon. Lois Mitchell received Honourary Doctor of Laws degrees from both the University of Alberta and the University of Calgary, became a Dame of Justice of the Order of St. John and received the Alberta Order of Excellence. In 2012 she was named a Member of the Order of Canada.

Dr. Rupinder Toor, BSC MD CCFP FCFP

Medical Director & Founder, The IUD Women’s Clinic

While in medical school, Dr. Rupinder Toor realized that many individuals (even in her own family!) were not having their female health needs addressed due to gender, language and cultural barriers. She envisioned a clinic with an all female team, with various language skills, that would be a comfortable place for individuals to come to have their female health needs addressed. In 2007 she founded The Northeast Calgary Women’s Clinic and later The IUD Clinic.

Dr. Toor is the Founder & Medical Director of The IUD & NE Female Health Clinic. She has been a champion and innovator of female health and culturally appropriate health care. Dr Rupinder Toor has been a pioneer in establishing female health as an area of focus within the scope of Family Medicine, and shares her passion for these areas with students, health care professionals and her community. She is fluent in English and Punjabi (and can understand most Hindi and Urdu!).

About the Enbridge Famous 5 Speaker Series

This series profiled extraordinarily successful women who spoke candidly about their careers, and the passion, vision and determination that drives them. The speakers discussed our place in society and the ethical responsibilities and consequences of our actions. In relating their lives, guests heard about challenges as well as triumphs, humorous incidents and stories of loss, humbling moments of reflection and inspiring calls to action. The Famous 5 Foundation’s Leadership Lunches launched on Oct. 18, 1996. In 2004, Enbridge became our title sponsor and we are very grateful for their on-going support!
