  • Virtual Event (12:00 pm MDT / 2:00 pm EDT / 3:30 pm NT) Canada (map)

The Queen & Canada!

The Honourable Lynda Haverstock, C.M., S.O.M., Ph.D., LL.D. (Hon.)

Former Lt. Governor, Saskatchewan

Please note, the event will begin at 12:00 pm MDT / 2 pm EDT / 3:30 pm NL

Hon. Lynda Haverstock

Dr. Haverstock was born and raised in Saskatchewan. After leaving high school at 15, she returned as an adult to finish grades 11 and 12. At university, Dr. Haverstock completed a Bachelor and Master degrees in the Education of Exceptional Children and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology.

Initially, her work focused on children with special needs – the deaf, those with specific learning disabilities, as well as chronically truant students. Between teaching at the University of Saskatchewan and the Universite de Moncton in New Brunswick, she established and ran highly successful programs for these groups, some of which exist today.

After obtaining her doctorate, Dr. Haverstock taught university, provided clinical services, and did research in the Centre for Agricultural Medicine. She worked with farm families in crisis and became nationally and internationally known for her contributions to this field. Her concerns about the lack of public policies addressing the farm crisis had her enter politics in 1989. She became the first woman to lead a political party in her province. Entering the legislature in 1991, she helped grow her party from one elected member to Official Opposition by 1995. Within months, she resigned as Leader and sat as an Independent Member for four years, choosing not to seek re-election.

Following politics, Dr. Haverstock became a radio talk show host. In 2000, the Prime Minister asked her to become Saskatchewan’s 19th Lieutenant Governor. She is the recipient of numerous honours, including Canada’s highest civilian recognition – the Order of Canada, the Saskatchewan Order of Merit, the University of Saskatchewan’s 100 People of Influence and the Distinguished Canadian Award. She was a proud honorary Colonel in the Airforce and has received honorary doctorates from different universities.

After her time as the Lieutenant Governor, Dr. Haverstock became the President/CEO of Tourism Saskatchewan. She also served as a dedicated member of the Shaw Communications Board of Directors for several years. Despite a stroke, her interests in and work on behalf of the disabled, the Arts and in finding creative solutions for challenging problems continue to this day.

About the Enbridge Famous 5 Speaker Series

This series profiled extraordinarily successful women who spoke candidly about their careers, and the passion, vision and determination that drives them. The speakers discussed our place in society and the ethical responsibilities and consequences of our actions. In relating their lives, guests heard about challenges as well as triumphs, humorous incidents and stories of loss, humbling moments of reflection and inspiring calls to action. The Famous 5 Foundation’s Leadership Lunches launched on Oct. 18, 1996. In 2004, Enbridge became our title sponsor and we are very grateful for their on-going support!
