The Honourable Dr. Vivienne Poy, PhD University of Toronto, is an author, entrepreneur, historian, fashion designer, community volunteer and ‘Women Are Persons’ Monument Donor! In 1998, she was the first Canadian of Asian descent to be appointed to the Senate of Canada where she focused on gender issues, multiculturalism, immigration, and human rights, and was instrumental in having May recognized as Asian Heritage Month across Canada. After her retirement from the Senate of Canada in September 2012, she continues to be actively involved with communities across Canada.

She is Chancellor Emerita of the University of Toronto, member of the Board of ORBIS (Canada), Member of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights National Advisory Council, Hon. Co-chair "For All Canadians" - Canadian Blood Services, Hon. Patron of Chinese Canadian Historical Project - Simon Fraser University, Hon. Chair of Advisory Committee of "Hong Kong-Canada Crosscurrents Project, 1962-2012," Advisor to the Pacific Canada Heritage Centre - Museum of Migration Society, Member of the Advisory Committee of Journal of Modern Life-Writing Study, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, National Chair of the Chinese Canadian Campaign for Breaking the Silence Gallery in the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, and Hon. Patron of ExplorASIAN Festival.

She has received numerous honorary degrees and professorship from universities in Canada, USA, China, Hong Kong and South Korea, as well as many honours and awards.

Sarah Hussaini

Chief of Staff to the Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry

Sarah Hussaini is the Chief of Staff to Canada’s Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry. In this role, she is the Minister’s most senior advisor and is responsible for overseeing the Minister’s team across all functions, helping lead one of the largest departments in the federal government. This includes pursuing an ambitious agenda in areas such as innovation and skills, job creation, and fighting climate change.

Over the past year, she has also been at the forefront of the government’s response to COVID-19: helping industry re-tool to make PPE here in Canada, supporting vaccine research, re-building domestic capacity in biomanufacturing, and helping Canadian businesses through the economic downturn.

Prior to this role, Sarah served as a Policy Advisor to the Prime Minister of Canada where she supported the development and implementation of major economic policies related to international trade, housing, labour, and global investment, among other areas. Sarah began her career on Parliament Hill as a Policy Advisor to the Minister of International Trade, where she worked on the CETA (Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement) and the CPTPP.

Before joining the Federal government, Sarah was a Global Markets Advisor at Toronto Global, the investment promotion agency of Canada’s largest city, where her work primarily focused on the technology sector. She has also worked in Asia, Africa and the Middle East doing market research in the natural resource sector. Her reports have been published in major trade publications.

Sarah attended the University of Toronto for her undergraduate degree in history and also studied at the Institut d'études politiques de Paris (Sciences Po).

L'honorable Dre. Vivienne Poy a obtenu son doctorat de l’Université de Toronto. Elle est auteure, entrepreneure, historienne, créatrice de mode et bénévole communautaire. En 1998, elle a été la première Canadienne d'origine asiatique à être nommée au Sénat du Canada, où elle s'est concentrée sur les questions de genre, le multiculturalisme, l'immigration et les droits de la personne, et a contribué à faire reconnaître le mois de mai comme le Mois du patrimoine asiatique dans tout le Canada. Après avoir pris sa retraite du Sénat du Canada en septembre 2012, elle continue de s'impliquer activement dans les communautés à travers le Canada.

Elle est chancelière émérite de l'Université de Toronto, membre du conseil d'administration d'ORBIS (Canada), membre du conseil consultatif national du Musée canadien des droits de la personne, coprésidente honoraire de l'initiative « Pour tous les Canadiens » de la Société canadienne du sang, présidente d'honneur du Chinese Canadian Historical Project de l'Université Simon Fraser, présidente honoraire du comité consultatif de l'initiative « Hong Kong-Canada Crosscurrents Project, 1962-2012 », conseillère du Pacific Canada Heritage Centre - Museum of Migration Society, membre du comité consultatif du Journal of Modern Life-Writing Study, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, présidente nationale de la campagne sino-canadienne pour la création de la galerie Briser le silence au Musée canadien des droits de la personne, et présidente d'honneur du festival ExplorASIAN.

Sarah Hussaini

Chef de cabinet du ministre de l’Innovation, des Sciences et de l’Industrie

Sarah Hussaini est chef de cabinet du ministre de l'Innovation, des Sciences et de l'Industrie du Canada. À ce titre, elle est la plus haute conseillère du ministre, contribuant ainsi à diriger l'un des plus grands ministères du gouvernement fédéral. Cela inclut la poursuite d'un programme ambitieux dans des domaines tels que l'innovation et les compétences, la création d'emplois et la lutte contre le changement climatique.

Au cours de l'année écoulée, elle a également été à l'avant-garde de la réponse du gouvernement à la pandémie de COVID-19, notamment pour aider l'industrie à se réoutiller pour fabriquer des EPI ici au Canada, soutenir la recherche sur les vaccins, établir la capacité nationale de biofabrication et aider les entreprises canadiennes à rester à flot pendant le ralentissement économique.

Avant d'occuper ce poste, elle a été conseillère en politiques auprès du Premier ministre du Canada, où elle a soutenu l'élaboration et la mise en œuvre de politiques économiques majeures liées, entre autres, au commerce international, au logement, à la main-d'œuvre et aux investissements mondiaux. Sarah a commencé sa carrière au parlement en tant que conseillère en politiques au ministère du Commerce international, où elle a travaillé sur l'AECG (Accord économique et commercial global entre le Canada et l'Union européenne) et le CPTPP.

Avant de rejoindre le gouvernement fédéral, Sarah était conseillère en marchés mondiaux chez Toronto Global, où son travail était principalement axé sur le secteur technologique. Elle a également travaillé en Asie, en Afrique et au Moyen-Orient où elle a mené des études de marché dans le secteur des ressources naturelles. Ses rapports ont été publiés dans d'importantes revues spécialisées.

Sarah a obtenu un diplôme de premier cycle en histoire à l'université de Toronto et a également étudié à l'Institut d'études politiques de Paris (Sciences Po).
