Barbara Paterson is the Canadian sculptor who created the first permanent monument which commemorates Canadian women as nation builders! Ms. Paterson developed the bronze statues known as the Woman are Persons! Famous 5 Monument. The memorial was commissioned by the Famous 5 Foundation to honour the ‘Persons’ Case and the Alberta women who persuaded the Government of Canada to ask the Supreme Court of Canada to legal challenge to the word "persons" which defined who could serve as a Senator. The Canadian Court replied in the negative but luckily a year later, on Oct. 18, 1929, the Privy Council of Great Britain said, “Yes, women are persons!”

Barbara Paterson is an Albertan who studied at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, where she received a Diploma of Arts with a major in Painting in 1957. In 1988 Barbara graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, with a major in Sculpture. Her work includes sculptures of welded steel, bronze, wax and stone. In September 1997, Barbara was selected to create a monument to the Famous 5 through a national competition. The first Women Are Persons! Monument was unveiled by Governor General Adrienne Clarkson in Calgary’s Olympic Plaza to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the ‘Persons’ Case on October 18, 1999. The monument in Ottawa was unveiled outside the door of the Senate on Parliament Hill at a ceremony on October 18, 2000, attended by Governor General Adrienne Clarkson, Rt. Honourable Jean Chretien and Rt. Honourable Beverley McLachlin. Both unveilings attracted thousands of people and many more enjoyed the Newsworld live broadcasts.

Barbara Paterson's life-size bronze sculptures have been installed at an elementary school in Edmonton, the St. Albert City Hall and the Ghosts Project in Red Deer. An artist with an international reputation, Barbara Paterson has exhibited her work widely, from Bulgaria to Singapore. Her projects have included a life-size statue of Dr. Moses Coady, founder of the Coady Institute at St. Francis Xavier (unveiled 2007), and a monument in Victoria, B.C. to commemorate the talented artist, Emily Carr. The Emily Carr statue was unveiled on October 13th, 2010.

The University of Alberta presented Barbara Paterson with a Distinguished Alumni Award in 2000.

M. Ann McCaig

Philanthropist and Community Leader

Ann McCaig is one of Canada's most prominent leaders in the charitable, not-for-profit sector, a well-known advocate in education, health and youth development and a passionate supporter of arts and culture. Ann and her daughters, Roxanne and Jane were the first ‘Women Are Persons!’ monument donors! Born and raised in Tisdale, Saskatchewan, Ann has maintained a life-long commitment to caring about others demonstrated by her tireless volunteer involvement with organizations in Calgary and across the country.

Ann’s small-town prairie upbringing lies at the root of her commitment to community service. Her early years in Saskatchewan centered around family, church and community. It was a world where, as Ann points out, “if you wanted something, you did it yourself. You raised the funds and had fun doing it.” This environment provided Ann with a powerful combination of traits – a sense of warmth and compassion for others, tempered with a healthy dose of determination, strength and self-sufficiency.

As a champion for the cause of advanced education and research, Ann has strong ties to the University of Calgary where she is Chancellor Emeritus and a former member of the Board of Governors. She is also a Director Emeritus of the Gairdner Foundation, a former Trustee of the Killam Trusts and a former director of the Banff Centre Foundation.

With an equally strong passion for health care and community development, Ann is the Honourary Chair of the Alberta Bone and Joint Health Institute and Chair Emeritus of the Calgary Health Trust, and a former board member of the Calgary & Area Child Advocacy Centre. She also served as the Chair of the Calgary Foundation, the City of Calgary Police Interpretive Centre and the Alberta Adolescent Recovery Centre (AARC). She was a cabinet member for the Resolve Campaign to End Homelessness.

Western heritage and the development of a vibrant arts and culture sector are important to Ann. She is Chair Emeritus of the Calgary Stampede Foundation and also serves as a board member with the National Arts Centre Foundation. She regularly helps a variety of local arts groups with their fundraising and friendraising activities.

In the last 30 years, Ann has led numerous successful capital campaigns for major institutions in Calgary, raising millions of dollars for the U of C’s national Building on the Vision campaign and the Delivering Results campaign for the Faculty of Management. She co-chaired the Alberta Children’s Hospital All for One, All for Kids campaign to help build a state-of-the-art pediatric facility in Calgary, and she helped raise millions of dollars as chair of the Recovering Teens, Celebrating Miracles campaign for AARC.

Ann’s outstanding contributions have been recognized at local, provincial and national levels. She is a member of the Order of Canada and the recipient of many, many awards some of which include the Alberta Order of Excellence, the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Award and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada Award, the Alberta Order of Excellence, the Alberta Centennial Award, the Rotary Integrity Award, the Paul Harris Fellowship Rotary International Award and the YWCA Woman of Distinction Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2015 Ann was given the name ‘White Wolf Woman’ by Blackfoot Elder Casey Eaglespeaker in recognition of her support for Alberta’s First Nations people.

Today Ann enjoys spending time with her children and grandchildren, is an avid golfer and loves to cook!

Roxanne McCaig

Roxanne has a strong interest in art, culture and community. As a student, she earned an art history degree combined with studies in cultural resource management and interior design. Her commitment to serving the charitable sector is reflected in over 25 years of board experience with organizations such as the Alberta University of the Arts, YWCA Calgary, the Famous Five Foundation and the Branch Out Neurological Foundation. Roxanne has a track record for pioneering innovative fundraising initiatives and her contributions have been recognized by the Association of Fundraising Professionals. Roxanne is currently serving on the Walrus board to support national long-form fact-based journalism. One of her top priorities is to share her love for community with her children, whom she had the privilege of raising as a full-time mom.

Artiste Canadien - Sculpteur

Barbara Paterson est la sculptrice canadienne qui a créé le premier monument permanent à la mémoire des bâtisseuses de la nation canadienne! Elle a conçu les statues de bronze connues sous le nom de « Les femmes sont des personnes! ». Le monument a été commandé par la Famous 5 Foundation en souvenir de l'affaire « Personnes » et des Albertaines qui ont persuadé le gouvernement du Canada de demander à la Cour suprême du Canada de revoir la définition du mot « personne » pour que les femmes puissent être nommées au Sénat. La Cour suprême a répondu par la négative mais heureusement, un an plus tard, le 18 octobre 1929, le Conseil privé de Grande-Bretagne a déclaré : « Oui, les femmes sont des personnes! »

Barbara Paterson est native de l’Alberta et qui a étudié à l'Université de l'Alberta à Edmonton, où elle a obtenu un diplôme d'arts avec une spécialisation en peinture en 1957. En 1988, elle a obtenu une licence en beaux-arts, avec une spécialisation en sculpture. Son travail comprend des sculptures en acier soudé, en bronze, en cire et en pierre. En septembre 1997, elle a été choisie pour créer un monument aux Cinq célèbres dans le cadre d'un concours national. Le premier monument a été dévoilé par la gouverneure générale Adrienne Clarkson à l'Olympic Plaza de Calgary pour célébrer le 70e anniversaire de l'affaire « Personne » le 18 octobre 1999. Le monument d'Ottawa a été dévoilé devant la porte du Sénat sur la Colline du Parlement lors d'une cérémonie le 18 octobre 2000, en présence de la gouverneure générale Adrienne Clarkson, du très honorable Jean Chrétien et de la très honorable Beverley McLachlin. Les deux cérémonies ont attiré des milliers de personnes et beaucoup d'autres ont apprécié les diffusions en direct de Newsworld.

Ses sculptures en bronze grandeur nature ont été installées dans une école élémentaire d’Edmonton, à l'hôtel de ville de St. Albert et font partie de la Public Art Ghost Collection à Red Deer. Un artiste de renommée internationale, Barbara Paterson a exposé ses œuvres dans de nombreux pays, de la Bulgarie à Singapour. Elle a notamment réalisé une statue grandeur nature du Dr Moses Coady, fondateur du Coady Institute de St.-Francis-Xavier (dévoilée en 2007), ainsi qu'un monument à Victoria, en Colombie-Britannique, pour commémorer la talentueuse artiste Emily Carr. La statue d'Emily Carr a été dévoilée le 13 octobre 2010.

Philanthrope et Leader Communautaire

Championne de la cause de l'éducation et de la recherche avancées, elle a des liens étroits avec l'Université de Calgary, dont elle est la chancelière émérite et dont elle a été membre du conseil des gouverneurs. En 2016, l'Université a baptisé une rue de son nouveau campus "McCaig Street " en l'honneur de ses contributions. Ann est également directrice émérite de la Gairdner Foundation, ancienne administratrice des Killam Trusts et ancienne directrice de la Banff Centre Foundation.

Elle se passionne tout autant pour les soins de santé et le développement communautaire. Elle est présidente honoraire de l'Alberta Bone and Joint Health Institute et présidente émérite du Calgary Health Trust, et a été membre du conseil d'administration du Calgary & Area Child Advocacy Centre. Elle a été vice-présidente de la campagne nationale « Building on the Vision » de 40 millions de dollars de l'Université de Calgary et coprésidente de la campagne « Delivering Results » de 13 millions de dollars pour la Faculté de gestion. Elle a coprésidé la campagne « All for One, All for Kids » de l'Alberta Children's Hospital, qui a permis de recueillir plus de 52 millions de dollars pour la construction d'un établissement pédiatrique ultramoderne à Calgary, et elle a contribué à collecter 9,6 millions de dollars en tant que présidente de la campagne « Recovering Teens, Celebrating Miracles » pour l'AARC.

Après avoir obtenu son baccalauréat en éducation de l'Université de la Saskatchewan en 1961, elle a travaillé comme enseignante d'anglais et d'histoire à Calgary et à Regina et, pendant cette période, elle a aidé à établir l'un des premiers foyers d’accueil pour jeunes en difficulté à Regina. En 1970, Ann et son mari se sont installés à Calgary où elle a fait du bénévolat pour la Junior League et Centraide tout en élevant ses trois enfants, Roxanne, Jane et John. Aujourd'hui, Ann aime passer du temps avec ses enfants et ses petits-enfants. Elle adore jouer au golf et cuisiner

Les contributions exceptionnelles d'Ann ont été reconnues aux niveaux local, provincial et national. Elle est membre de l'Ordre du Canada et a reçu un doctorat honorifique en droit de l'Université de Calgary et de l'Université de l'Alberta. Elle est l'une des premières lauréates du prix du partenariat en éducation de l'Université de Calgary, et l'Université de la Saskatchewan lui a décerné le prix Alumni Humanitarian. Elle a reçu le prix du jubilé de la Reine Elizabeth II et la médaille du jubilé de diamant de la Reine Elizabeth II, le prix du 125e anniversaire de la Confédération du Canada, l'Ordre d'excellence de l'Alberta, le prix du centenaire de l'Alberta, le prix de l'intégrité du Rotary, le prix Paul Harris Fellowship du Rotary International et le prix Femme de mérite du YWCA pour l'ensemble de ses réalisations. En 2011, Ann a reçu un prix de reconnaissance exceptionnelle du chef de police de Calgary et en 2012, elle a reçu le Grant MacEwan Lifetime Achievement Award de la ville de Calgary et le Generosity of Spirit Award for Outstanding Lifetime Philanthropist lors de la Journée nationale de la philanthropie. En 2015, Ann a reçu le nom de « White Wolf Woman » de l'aîné Blackfoot Casey Eaglespeaker en reconnaissance de son soutien aux Premières Nations de l'Alberta.
