From the world’s leading forest ecologist who forever changed how people view trees, their connections to one another and to other living things in the forest - a moving, deeply personal journey of discovery.

Suzanne Simard is a Professor of Forest Ecology at the University of British Columbia and the author of the book, Finding the Mother Tree.

She is a pioneer on the frontier of plant communication and intelligence; and has been hailed as a scientist who conveys complex, technical ideas in a way that is dazzling and profound. Her work has influenced filmmakers (the Tree of Souls in James Cameron’s Avatar) and her TED talks have been viewed by more than 10 million people worldwide.

Suzanne is known for her work on how trees interact and communicate using below-ground fungal networks, which has led to the recognition that forests have hub trees, or Mother Trees, which are large, highly connected trees that play an important role in the flow of information and resources in a forest. Her current research investigates how these complex relationships contribute to forest resiliency, adaptability and recovery and has far-reaching implications for how to manage and heal forests from human impacts, including climate change.

Suzanne has published over 200 peer-reviewed articles and presented at conferences around the world. She has communicated her work to a wide audience through interviews, documentary films and her TEDTalk “How trees talk to one another”.

Mary Anne Moser has built a career at the crossroads of science and society as a strategist, communicator and not-for-profit sector entrepreneur. She was the founding editor of Banff Centre Press in 1995, created the Banff Science Communications Program in 2005, started Canada’s Iron Science Teacher competition in 2007 and co-founded Beakerhead in 2012, a smash-up of arts and science. She is the editor of two books on science in society: Immersed in Technology: Art and Virtual Environments and Science, She Loves Me. Mary Anne holds a bachelor of science degree in zoology, master’s in communications, and an interdisciplinary PhD. On November 5, 2019, Mount Royal University awarded Mary Anne an Honourary Doctorate in Laws for her commitment to discovery and communication.

Suzanne Simard est professeure d’écologie forestière à l’Université de la Colombie-Britannique et est l’auteure du livre Finding the Mother Tree.

Elle est précurseur dans les travaux se situant à la frontière entre la communication et l’intelligence des végétaux; et a été encensée en tant que scientifique qui exprime des idées complexes et techniques d’une manière éblouissante et approfondie. Ses travaux ont influencé des réalisateurs de film (l’arbre des âmes dans le film Avatar de James Cameron); et ses conférences TED ont été visionnées par plus de dix millions de personnes dans le monde entier.

Mme Simard est connue pour ses travaux sur la façon dont les arbres interagissent et communiquent grâce à des réseaux fongiques souterrains, ce qui a conduit à la reconnaissance du fait que les forêts possèdent des arbres-carrefours, les arbres-mères. Il s’agit de gros arbres fortement reliés qui jouent un rôle important dans la circulation de l’information et des ressources au sein d’une forêt. Ses travaux actuels portent sur la contribution de ces relations complexes à la résilience, aux capacités d’adaptation et au rétablissement des forêts. De tels travaux ont d’importantes retombées relativement aux modalités de la gestion des répercussions des activités humaines, dont le changement climatique, sur les forêts et leur rétablissement.

Mme Simard a publié plus de 200 articles évalués par des comités de lecture et a pris part à des conférences dans le monde entier. Elle a présenté ses travaux à un large public par l’intermédiaire d’entrevues, de films documentaires et de sa conférence TED sur la communication entre les arbres intitulée « How trees talk to one another ».
