Famous 5 Commemorated On New $50 Bill
The Achievements of the Famous 5: Emily Murphy, Irene Parlby, Louise McKinney, Henrietta Muir Edwards and Nellie McClung are recognized in a new $50 bill announced by the Bank of Canada today. The bill features the Famous 5 as they triumphantly celebrate the 1929 Privy Council of England's decision declaring women as 'persons'. The 'Persons' Case was a landmark ruling which recognized the equality of women in Canadian society and throughout the entire British Commonwealth.
The decision enabled women to participate in all facets of public life, including being appointed to the Senate. This bill pays tribute to Canada's nation builders and applauds those who have campaigned for the equality of rights and freedoms that every citizen of Canada enjoys today.
